Organic Farming
1. Organic agriculture means a process of developing available sustainable
agro-ecosystem. The time between the start of organic management and certification
of crops and /or animal husbandry is known as the conversion period. Organic
certification is based upon continuance.
2. The Concept of Organic Agriculture has been accepted globally. At present
about 24 million hectares of land area is under organic farming in the
world and expected market of organic food is to touch # 100-billion by
2008. Organic agriculture is not only about use of organic inputs or nature
conservation, it has also widened premium market. The organic export by
India during 2003 is estimated for US# 15.5 million (710 Million Indian
Rupees) which is quite encouraging.
3. For sustainable agro-ecosystem to function optimally, diversity in
crop production and animal husbandry must be arranged in such a way that
all elements of farming management interplay. Conversion may be accomplished
over a period of time. A farm may be converted step by step. The quality
of crops production and al animal husbandry should be converted to organic
management. There should be clear plan of how to proceed with the conversion.
The certification program shall set standards for how different farming
systems can be clearly separated in production as well as documentation,
the standards should determine how to present a mix up of input factors
and product.
4. For marketing of organic produce, the market demands proper certification
of the product which is possible only through detailed inspection. In
fact, the certification procedure involves trained inspectors who will
build quality inspection system as required by National and International
Standards.
