Crop Production Scenario

Performance of Different Crops During 2010-2011
The year 2010-11 agriculturally remained good year. Maize and Paddy are the principal food grains crops grown during Kharif-2010 season and 100% area was sown under these crops during Kharif-2010 season. Other minor crops are Ragi, Millets and Pulses. An area of 411.32 thousand hectare was sown under foodgrains. Out of total cultivated area, 81.5% is rainfed therefore production of Kharif crops largely depends upon the behaviour of south west monsson. Due to large variation in altitude and thereby in agro climatic conditions sowing of Kharif crops start from end of April and continue till July. However, sowing of Kharif in major foodgrain producing areas was completed by the end of July. In the peak sowing season of Kharif crops i.e. June to mid July, most of the districts had normal rainfall. The percent departure of rainfall in the month of April, May, June, July & August, 2010 was to the extent of -23%, 28%, 34%, -10% and 7% respectively. About 20% of area is sown in the month of April-May whereas 70% of area is sown in the month of June which is a peak Kharif sowing period. Due to normal rainfall in most of the part of the state, the sowing could be done in time and the overall crop condition was normal.
During Rabi 2010-11 season wheat was the principal food grain crops grown. 100% area was sown during Rabi 2010-11 season. Other crops are Barley, Gram and Rabi Pulses. An area of 388.97 thousand hectare was sown under foodgrains. Out of total cultivated area 81.5% is rainfed therefore production of Rabi crops largely depends upon the behavior of south west monsoon . Due to large variation in altitude and thereby in agro climatic conditions sowing of Rabi crops start from end of Mid October and continue till January. However, sowing of Rabi crops in major food grain producing areas was completed by the end of January. In the peak sowing season of Rabi crops i.e. November to Mid January, most of the districts had deficit rainfall. The percent departure of rainfall in the month of October, November, December, 2010 and January, 2011, was to the extent of -45%, -10%, 41% and -64% respectively. As per the estimates of area, production and yield of crops during Rabi 2010-2011 season, the total production was 720.00 thousand tones.
The food grain production during 2010-11 was 12.26 lakh M.T. as against 14.41 lakh M.Ts. during 2007-08. The production of Potato was 1.03 lakh M.T. in 2009-10 as against 1.55 lakh M.T in 2007-08.
Performance of crop production during the 10th & 11th Plan period from 2005-06 to 2008-09 and likely for the year,2009-10.....
